When did you first get interested in music?
Kris: I started taking violin lessons at three, piano lessons in kindergarten, and saxophone as a teenager. So, essentially music has always been part of my life, and I am thankful that this opportunity presented itself at such an early age.
Are there any musicians that inspired you to pursue this career?
Kris: I contain multitudes. On the one hand, with my piano work, I wrote pieces mainly in the vein of Chopin, with elements of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky. The romantic, impressionistic way that Chopin composed was particularly moving and spoke to me on multiple levels, for his struggles and the strength in the soft sound he utilized so effectively.
For the poppier side of things, Carole King, Billy Joel, Elton John, and Stevie Nicks are equally crucial to my development as a musician. The songwriter era possesses magic.
So far, you have mentioned a lot of instrumentation and references to songwriters, yet you have yet to say who inspired your singing. What led to your decision to sing?
Kris: This is probably my most recent breakthrough. For a long time, I thought I’d focus on songwriting, film scoring, and things where I could control all aspects while remaining a bit aloof. After my third year at the University of Western Ontario, completing a Bachelor’s in Music, I finally decided to sing. This was only a little more than a year ago, and that, alongside positive feedback I received on my TikTok account, convinced me this was a path worth pursuing.
