Music Video Review: Truth Francisco turns tragedy into hard-fought triumph on new release ‘Holding On

One of the most brilliantly introspective rap lyricists we’ve heard in a long time, ‘Truth’ speaks his truth and opens up about his failings in this powerful 7-minute music video

Rising hip-hop star Truth Francisco has shared his newest music video and single, a 7-minute odyssey into the tribulations of his life, titled ‘Holding On.’

The artist, born in the Acres Home neighborhood of Houston, has risen to become one of the most exciting and lyrically adept artists we’ve heard in years. Having discovered a love for music at an early age, Truth’s career was characterized by several losses, which played a role in his life. These included the loss of his father, and a year later, the loss of his grandmother, the loss of his baby cousin, the murder of his older cousin, and a devastating house fire – which serves as a setting for his most recent music video.  In this sobering reality of loss, one finds solace in the music that speaks to their heart, and such is the case here.

Rather than let these tragedies break him, Truth has been making music out of respect and love for the ones he lost. ‘Holding On’ – directed by Truth himself and featuring the voice of Bea Moon – is as powerful a song as you’re likely to hear this summer. In a sensitively directed video, Truth replays and revisits the traumatic events of his life, hoping to find some solace by turning them into art. There’s real blood, real pain, and real hurt here – not just from Truth himself but also from his family, who provide him with guidance and support in the video.

Among the pain we witness in the visuals, we’re also struck by some brilliantly intense lyrics. The artist tells us he’s “a visionary stuck with obituaries.” This line lingers long after the video finishes.
