On their newest track, Florida-based duo The Dialogue offers a combination of synths, soul, pleasing harmonies – and a vibrant twist on ‘00s RnB. Musically, the song is utterly distinct from anything they’ve done previously.
Florida duo The Dialogue – made up of gifted multi-instrumentalists Angela Galestro and Paul Cuevas – have shared their newest single, ‘Waste the Day, Spend the Night.’
The duo is noted for having devoted their lives to music – Angela earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Shenandoah Conservatory while Paul pursued a bachelor’s degree in composition – and have cultivated a successful musical partnership with each other for over a decade. Their extensive musical backgrounds have informed their songwriting regarding The Dialogue; many genres have inspired the pair, including blues, salsa, classical, folk, pop, jazz, and classic rock.
The Dialogue has shared numerous tracks on streaming platforms, including ‘Papillon’ and their latest single ‘Begin Again,’ their most successful song. The duo has won praise for their pitch-perfect songwriting abilities on each release. Not only are their harmonies enchanting, but their lyrics have a specific poetic slant – with an ear towards evocative imagery, powerful metaphors, and conceits.
‘Waste the Day, Spend the Night’ sees The Dialogue offer something slightly different from what they’ve previously shared. The track, which rocks the vibes of an early ‘00s RnB song, is, above all, about irresistible passion – the kind of passion that dictates two lovers should spend all night locked in each other’s arms, so much so that they ignore the day when it comes around. The duo’s harmonies spar and complement each other on the track as each singer takes on the role of a desiring lover. Lyrically, the song grapples with the feelings of needing, demanding, and longing for another person before finally surrendering to a loving embrace.
Musically, ‘Waste the Day, Spend the Night’ offers fans something completely new from the duo. While many of their tracks so far could be described as intensely personal, reflective, acoustic-led songs, their latest single is an inventively textured, genre-defying track, which moves in unexpected directions even as it keeps you hooked from the get-go.
A pulsating guitar riff – delivered by the duo’s guitarist, Jonathan Smith – gives the song rhythm, groove, and sexuality. But beyond this, listeners will note how a subtle yet vital undercurrent of synth pins down the song’s various elements, giving the track a dynamic, atmospheric, dance-pop beat. (If you envision ‘Waste the Day, Spend the Night’ being played during a heightened sexual tension in a film or TV show, you might be getting close to understanding what The Dialogue is doing with their music.) This makes the song genuinely climactic and euphoric when the electronic drums are introduced during the song’s bridge.
If it’s an irresistible passion they’re going for, The Dialogue certainly knows how to deliver it. This is another excellent release.
