Single Recap: How Lisa Ramey’s sassy country-soul track ‘My Creator’ became a significant streaming success.

The singer-songwriter, who rose to fame after appearing on The Voice, has been noted for delivering music that prizes confidence, independence, and empowerment.

Lisa Ramey might have come to the limelight following her appearance on the music competition show The Voice – where she performed as a member of Team Legend and gained particular acclaim for her showstopping version of ‘The Weight’ – but in recent years, this enigmatic artist has shown why there are many sides to her musical talents.

The artist, who hails from St. Louis but is currently based in New York, has spent the years following her appearance on national TV turning into the type of performer she’s always dreamed of being. Following The Voice, she performed alongside Ms. Lauryn Hill, which cemented her place as an emerging live star.

Lisa’s appetite for live performances was undaunted even by the upheavals following the pandemic in 2020. In March of that year, she released her highly anticipated debut album, Surrender, pushing the boundaries of her artistry and delivering a powerful blend of soul and rock. As lockdowns took effect, Lisa embraced the new era of virtual concerts and became a regular fixture in several prominent live-stream gigs.

She performed her debut album on Twitch’s homepage, sharing the spotlight with other renowned acts such as John Legend, Camilla Cabello, and Common as part of the Global Citizen’s “Together at Home” concert series. Beyond this, she also graced the virtual stages of Questlove’s The Roots Jam Solo Sessions, Spin Magazine, StageIt, The Children’s Health Fund Gala (performing alongside James Taylor), and The Virtual March on Washington (alongside Macy Gray and H.E.R).

At the same time, Ramey has ensured that her platform as a prominent musician has gone hand-in-hand with important political advocacy and social justice causes. She has previously worked with Vice President Kamala Harris and even received an invitation to join the Recording Academy.

She also further pushed the boundaries of what soulful pop music can offer when she released her second album, Broken Smile, in 2023. Lisa Ramey’s sophomore album is a very different affair to your run-of-the-mill LPs, as the songs on this record re-imagine the historically significant music of civil rights activist Ms. Fannie Lou Hamer. As Lisa herself puts it, she wanted to reawaken the importance of this music, which has, in many ways, been forgotten about.

Lisa’s newest single, however, bears all the trademark pop elements that helped her become a massive success. ‘My Creator’ is a soul song with just the right tinge of country thrown into the mix. Lyrically, ‘My Creator’ sees Lisa Ramey hit back at anyone who dares to judge the choices she’s made in her life, saying that the only one who can pass judgment on her is her ‘Creator.’

As songs about confidence and empowerment go, this is up there with the best of them.
