From Pop-Punk to Country – Justin Mattock Speaks on How to Navigate a Nuanced Number of Genres

For nearly a decade, Justin Mattock has successfully explored and engaged with multiple musical genres – from Pop-punk to the Country charts. After trading his signature black skinny jeans for blue denim and delving into modern Pop/Country, he released his debut single, “By Your Side” (Produced by Garrett Ward & Dan Botch), which captured listeners across the globe. His music continued to gain traction with 4 songs amassing over 250K streams collectively, recently gaining radio airplay in several countries around the world, including Australia (#4 on UK Country Chart), Canada, the US, etc., all culminating with 2021’s release of ‘She’s Whiskey.’ As one of Canada’s most promising multi-genre talents, Justin appears to rise to each challenge, becoming better than ever, no matter what style or sound is thrown at him. Check out his latest release, “Seventeen,” on streaming platforms everywhere.

Question: What was your first experience in the Canadian music scene?

Justin Mattock: In 2014, I started as the producer for Chase Your Words, a Vancouver-based Pop-Rock outfit. A lot of what I learned then influenced where I headed later on.

Question: After working with Chase Your Words, did you decide to go and pursue a solo career?

JM: That came later. I kept the pop-punk aesthetic but decided to switch it up with something slightly more me (at least then). Woke Up Waiting was my first personal project, where I had a band and put out some more unique stuff. I was still figuring out my voice at that time.

Question: How was the music scene different back in Woke Up Waiting?

JM: Eventually, I changed the name to Harbourside, but we started with cover videos. Covers are still essential but might have fallen off since Harbourside’s heyday. To capitalize on some of the success we were seeing, we put out a 6-track EP, so I think a decent amount of output for the group.

Question: Your solo stuff – why the focus on country?

JM: I enjoy exploring new sounds all the time. I spent so much time in the pop-rock sphere of things I could take some of that energy and bring it to the world of country.
