Single Review: Scott Pryor’s latest single, ‘Red Rum,’ is full of menace, devious energy, and cryptic fiery statements about good and evil.

The latest single from filmmaker-turned-music star Scott Pryor is his loudest and most technically brilliant to date – but it’s also one of his most cryptic. ‘Red Rum’ offers listeners a mind-bending, Stephen King-inspired trip into visions of madness, evil, and murder.

Grunge-rock artist Scott Pryor has shared his latest single, ‘Red Rum,’ as he continues to build expectations for the release of his debut album later in 2024.

For those who don’t know him, Scott was raised in the Mountain West as a youngster before moving all over the world as part of an incredibly varied life journey, which has seen him be everything from an attorney to a U.S. Marine Vet to a filmmaker, and – now – to be a successful music artist.

Scott is best known for his string of films released throughout the 2010s. Having founded his entertainment agency, Pryor Entertainment, Scott wrote, produced, co-directed, and starred in three widely acclaimed feature films – Tulsa, Blackbear, and The List.

He found himself a central figure in the American film industry, but music had always been an essential reserve for Scott’s artistry. In recent years, he finally decided to tap into those reserves. Taking after his father, who he says was his most significant influence, Scott began plotting out the music star he wanted to be.

Inspired by the stadium-sized rock of artists like U2, Pearl Jam, Post Malone, Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, GNR, and Metallica, Scott honed in on a heart-on-sleeve grunge rock style. He built up a team around him – including vocal coach/producer “Mama Jan” Smith (Rob Thomas, Usher, Justin Bieber), and Jesse Owen Astin, musician/producer (Demi Lovato, Juliet Simms, Billy Ray Cyrus). In addition, Scott works daily with a vocal coach and singer-songwriter, Heidi Huelskoetter, to work on his voice and songwriting skills. This close team helped Scott unleash his long-held musical ambitions.

And, on his latest single ‘Red Rum,’ “unleashed” couldn’t be a more appropriate word for what Scott delivers.

On this,  the third release from his upcoming debut album, Scott offers a scorching, enigmatic meditation on wrestling with some of the most significant and haunting issues we face – life and death, good and evil, faith and doubt. His vocals are raw and savage, his lyrics are high-minded but razor-sharp, and the guitar work makes you feel like you’ve been thrown into a fevered illness only to be given a lifesaving shot at the same time.

It sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel, which might explain why the title is ‘Red Rum.’  But Scott stops short of fully explaining how this song came to be, wisely choosing to leave it open to interpretation. Speaking about ‘Red Rum,’ he explains:

“I don’t want to lay out everything. Mysteries are important to me in songwriting. The hook from ‘Red Rum’ comes from the film The Shining. For the rest, you’ll have to listen to the lyrics and figure it out…”

Get listening – ‘Red Rum’ is out now.
