With jagged guitar riffs and boundless vocal energy, Griffin Williams shouts an urgent ode to relationships gone wrong.
Griffin Williams knows a thing or two about making a killer track. The Gainesville artist, who has over 40,000 avid followers on TikTok and an impressive 8 million views across all streaming platforms, has captivated audiences with his no-nonsense approach to alternative rock.
Inspired by Tool, Alice In Chains, The Beatles, and John Mayer, Griffin has perfected a songwriting style indebted to various genres – from heavy rock to jazz to electronica. He shared his first original music just a year ago and quickly built a following with lyrically meaningful tracks like ‘Mulholland’ and ‘Breakthrough.’
‘How Do You Sleep At Night?’ is the latest impressive salvo from the 21-year-old singer. The song offers a murky but unrestrained look at what happens when two people – who are romantically involved – begin to suspect that their partner is lying to them. Beginning with straightforwardly grungy guitar riffs, Griffin’s hallucinatory lyrics take us into a world where paranoia, fear, and self-second-guessing rule the roost.
Griffin explains the lyrics’ meaning: “‘How Do You Sleep At Night?’ is a song about a love story gone wrong. The two partners suspect that they are being lied to by the other, creating a tense environment. Did these two former lovers betray each other, or has the toxicity of their relationship reached the point of no return?”
Guiding us through key changes, tempo changes, overdubs, and a scorching guitar solo, the song moves in unpredictable directions over 3 minutes, all before climaxing with a frenzy of yells, laughs, screams, and barks as Griffin asks almost threateningly to his addressee: “How do you sleep at night, knowing I’m always near, how do you sleep at night, knowing I’m your greatest fears.”
