Single Review: Island reggae, hip-hop, and pop – J.Lauryn’s new single ‘Who The Man’ shows the surprising versatility of this rising artist.

J.Lauryn might be new to many listeners, but she’s certainly not new to the music industry. The songwriter-turned-frontwoman has penned some of the most successful songs of the 21st Century. Now, she’s releasing her tracks, which show just how versatile she is as a solo artist.

In 2016, J.Lauryn landed her first job as a songwriter for a major artist. The artist in question was Ziggy Marley, whose claim to reggae royalty meant that the experience for J.Lauryn would only be formative.

For J, this was partly the fulfillment of a dream that had started nine years earlier, when she’d first left her home in Hawaii and moved to Los Angeles. In that time, she’d worked as a backup dancer to get by – but always harbored greater ambitions.

J.Lauryn was offered a big shot with her first songwriting placement – and she didn’t miss. Not only was Ziggy Marley’s 2016 LP a success, but it also won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Almost overnight, J.Lauryn became talked about as one of the best songwriters that major artists could hire.

She put her talents to the test at every opportunity. Since 2016, J.Lauryn has co-written hit songs for artists like Post Malone, BTS, Blackpink, Macklemore, and French Montana. As it currently stands, she is an 8x RIAA Platinum-selling Songwriter – with more gongs and awards than you could fill a room with.

But J.Lauryn is also poised to become a preeminent solo artist in the coming years. She has always kept an eye on her solo career, even as she has been songwriting for others (check out her 2017 debut album, Golden Year, to get a taste of how good she can be). Music fans can expect her to throw everything she has at building her solo artist stature.

J.Lauryn released her latest single, ‘Who The Man’, in early January. The single comes from her upcoming second album, which is heavily touted as one of the most ambitious LPs of the year.

Who The Man’ is an excellent look at just how versatile J.Lauryn can be. The song is indebted to the artist’s island roots, with her love for what she called “rhythmic reggae” shining through. But it is also a classically good hip-hop/pop hit. J raps like she’s been spitting bars her entire life. Her flow is immaculate.

J.Lauryn has many people in the music industry excited, and her team has spoken in recent months about her talents. Successful producer Sam-Yun, who worked with J on her last single ‘Bad To The Bone’, said: “J.Lauryn is a true visionary, artist, songwriter, & producer. [‘Bad To The Bone’] showcases her unique storytelling and is paired with musical elements that tap into her reggae roots. It’s an honor to have co-produced with her.”

‘Who The Man’ is just as good a single – if not better.
